cholangiocyte
cholangio.site · being built
| What it is | The epithelial cell lining the bile ducts of the liver, which modifies bile and senses its flow. |
|---|---|
| Comes from | Hepatoblast |
| About | Intrahepatic bile ducts range from 5 to 200 um in diameter and the cholangiocytes lining them from 3 to 80 um2 in area, and only the medium and large cholangiocytes carry the secretin receptor, the chloride-bicarbonate exchanger and CFTR. |

Where it lives
| The walls of the intrahepatic bile ducts, from the canal of Hering to the large ducts | rat · PMID 8613073 |
| Over the peribiliary glands of the large ducts, where the biliary tree stem cells sit | human · PMID 26524612 |
What it does
| Senses bile flow with a primary cilium and answers with calcium and cAMP | rat · PMID 16952559 |
| Secretes bicarbonate-rich fluid under secretin, in the medium and large ducts | rat · PMID 8613073 |
| Regrows the biliary tree after partial hepatectomy by dividing, DNA synthesis peaking at day 3 | rat · PMID 8942744 |
What goes wrong
| In cholangiocarcinoma the primary cilium is lost and the cells proliferate | rat and human · PMID 16952559 |
